Finest Kind Consulting: The Origin Story

Updated: May 7

Hello, and welcome to Finest Kind Consulting! We look forward to supporting businesses through communications and administrative management in the ski industry and beyond.

Finest Kind came about organically during off-season conversations between our founder, Julia Knowles, and a coworker at the Jackson Hole Mountain Sports School. After decades of experience bartending and serving, the coworker was branching out to open a restaurant with a top-notch chef and longtime peer. Both men were very enthusiastic about their new vision and bringing it to life.

As Julia inquired, she saw that their wealth of industry experience and passion was missing one key piece: business strategy. She offered some basic support, but her full-time career did not allow her spare bandwidth. Julia made a note to self: small business owners tend to start their own ventures because they are talented at what they do, not because they enjoy strategic planning and administration. A bit of outside support can remove barriers that hold owner-operators back from doing what they do best.

Over time, we realized that operational efficiencies and communications strategy can be challenging for even large national corporations. Leaders might not have systems in place to handle a PR emergency, or might need extra support while transitioning to a new customer management platform. Outside perspective can complement the deep historical knowledge found within a large organization to unlock new solutions.

During a complete overhaul of the recruiting and onboarding process for a $23 million profit center with 750 employees, we witnessed firsthand how a well-crafted communications strategy generates buy-in and useful feedback for a successful transition. The result was a huge improvement in the employee experience, higher accuracy of hiring and payroll data,

and hundreds of hours of company labor saved annually. That was a great start. We continued fine-tuning the workflow each year, applying users' feedback to improve each iteration and best address the ebbs and flows of hiring needs from season to season.

Healthy businesses constantly look ahead to ensure they remain relevant and impactful. Their owners know where to spend their limited time and energy. A consultant may accomplish in hours what might divert an owner-operator's resources for a full day or more. We enjoy opportunities to help clients large and small improve their workflows and systems while applying best communication practices along the way.
